Periodontology

Periodontology is the dental specialty dedicated to the study, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases affecting the gums and supporting structures of the teeth.

Healthy gums and periodontal tissues are essential for maintaining a functional and attractive smile.

The health of your teeth and gums has a direct impact on overall health. Recent studies have shown that the same bacteria that cause gum inflammation can also affect the coronary arteries.

Inflamed gums

Inflamed gums occur due to the accumulation of bacterial plaque and tartar and are one of the main causes of tooth loss in adults.

The first sign is usually bleeding during brushing and is generally painless. In more severe cases, the gums may appear red, swollen, and cause discomfort – this is known as gingivitis.

Periodontitis

If gingivitis is left untreated, it can exacerbate inflammation, resulting in gum recession, bone loss, tooth mobility, and eventually tooth loss – a condition known as periodontitis.

In the initial stage of periodontitis treatment, scaling and root planing are performed, but medication or surgical procedures may be necessary to remove subgingival tartar.

Periodontitis Treatment

During periodontitis treatment, proper brushing and flossing techniques will be recommended and should be followed systematically. The use of interdental brushes, gels, or specific mouthwashes may also be advised on a case-by-case basis.

Plastic Periodontal Surgery

In cases of localized gum recession in an aesthetic area, plastic periodontal surgery can be used to improve the appearance and architecture of the gums, reduce tooth sensitivity, and prevent further recession caused by periodontal disease. This type of gum reconstruction can be performed on natural teeth or implants.

If there is excess gum tissue covering too much of the teeth (a “gummy smile”), plastic periodontal surgery allows for predictable and stable removal of the excess tissue, restoring the original appearance and function. This procedure is called crown lengthening and can also be performed in cases of deep cavities or extensive crowns.
